The 2nd winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 23rd September 1777 over the 2 mile course on Cantley Common, was Bourbon, a bay colt by Le Sang out of Queen Elizabeth, owned by Mr William Sotherton, trained by Isaac Cape at Tupgill, Middleham, and ridden by John Cade. A field of 10 runners contested the race, although there were 12 subscriptions of 25 guineas each, which was worth 300 Guineas. (Equivalent to £47,600 in 2017) BOURBON SR 1890 |

The winner began his 3 year old career on 13th May 1777 at Hunmanby running second to a Turk filly. After claiming the St Leger in his second race he returned to Hunmanby on 26th May 1778 when he again ran second. He subsequently ran at Doncaster, Boroughbridge and New Malton, while in 1779 he suffered defeats at Hunmanby, York and Boroughbridge. |
